Abstract

The next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and precautionary measures to help prevent its spread, which were in troduced in October, suppressed the recovery of the manufacturing sectorwe observed in September. The industrial confidence indicator (ICI)declined by 12.8pts to -16.8pts. Itis now 6.7pts down from theOctober2019 figure, and close to the number recorded in June. Private firms have been more severely affected by the aggravated returnof theepidemic. The slowdown of economic activity was reported by all groups of manufacturers, except for those operating in the Dolnośląskie and Opolskie voivodships. Though production, total and export orders increased, and financial situation of manufacturing firms improved, there is no reason to be optimistic. Employment dropped, finished goods inventories grew, and opinions on general economic situation in the country worsened. The surveyed firms expect business situation in the sector andthe economy to contract sharply over the next months.(original abstract)
