Abstract

In April 2017 the industrial confidence indicator (ICI) monthly decreased by 2.7 pts to +5.1 pts. It is higher than a year earlier by 7.8 pts. After 4 months of incessant growth of the indicator the improvement of business situation in the manufacturing industry was suppressed. The majority of the balances increased but less than in March. Most of them are positive. It is a rise in the balances of production and orders, and an increase in the capacity utilization rate to be the most promising side of the survey results. Firms report a decline in the majority of the barriers to industrial activity. However, more and more firms find financial liquidity hard to sustain and skilled labor is getting scarce. Investment outlays are falling, and manufacturers' expectations are pessimistic. The big picture is therefore ambiguous, and it is hard to predict changes in the business situation in the nearest future. Anyway, seasonal factors are expected to be positive, so no sharp slowdown is probable to come up. (fragment of text)
