Abstract

In the 4 th quarter of 2022 the construction confidence indicator(CCI) declined by 12 pts to -1.3 pts. It is now 10.6 pts down from the respective year 2021 figure. The economic situation in the construction industry remains significantly worse than in the years 2017-2019, i.e. preceding the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critically affected by current general economic situation in Poland. On the demand side, we observe a fall in housing demand as the creditworthiness of consumers dropped due to high prices (esp. of energy) and interest rates, and, at the same time, they increased precautionary savings forced by highly uncertain economic perspectives. Furthermore, various fiscal tensions made the government reduce investment activity. On the supply side, construction firms strive to cope with cost overrun and shortages of raw and building materials, which have recently become the major challenges facing the construction industry. In general, construction companies, surveyed in October, assessed the current situation in the industry as poor, and are very pessimistic about their business prospects in the next quarter.(original abstract)
