Abstract
In August 2016 the industrial confidence indicator (ICI) increased by 3.5 points to +0.3 pts. It is 1.7 pts up from the August 2015 figure. The indicator calculated for private firms grew by 3.4 pts to -0.9 pts, and is lower than a year earlier by 0.3 points. The indicator calculated for public enterprises rose by 4.3 pts to +8.5 pts, the figure higher by 19 pts than the August 2015 one. Business situation improved the most in manufacture of consumer durables, the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, and firms employing more 251-500 persons. The improvement of business situation in the manufacturing industry is quite surprising as usually at the time of a year the economy softens and business gets weak. Firms are reporting their production declined but, on the other hand, orders, incl. export ones, are on the rise. Finished goods inventories and selling prices are still falling, and manufacturers' finances are better off. These positive changes may sustain over the next months as firms' expectations are moderately optimistic. However, the high volatility of business confidence makes predicting hardly reliable. Seasonal factors will negatively impact manufacturing in the coming months. (original abstract)
