Abstract

In October 2017 the industrial confidence indicator (ICIRIED) monthly declined by 1.1 pts to +2.1 pts, the figure 3.1 pts up from the respective last year one. For four last year's business situation in the manufacturing industry has shown no steady developing tendency. The indicator has been fluctuating around the zero value, and its monthly changes have been only slight, alternately positive and negative from month to month. No different in September and, as expected last month, in October too. The results of the survey are ambiguous. Production and total orders increased, but finished products inventories dropped. Financial situation of firms improved, and, at the same time, the rate of growth of selling prices declined. There are less firms complaining about high tax burden, insufficient demand and instable laws, however, manufacturers report a growing problem with hiring high skilled employees to fill new or expanded positions. Investments increased, mostly in buildings and construction, but firms express more and more concern on getting indebted. They are pessimistic about their business prospects. Usually, business situation deteriorates in the late autumn due to negative seasonal factors. However, the high volatility of business confidence makes predicting a hard task.(original abstract)
