Abstract

Poland took advantage of favourable political situation of late 1980s and conducted profound system reforms. In early 1990s neoliberal transformation strategy was conducted. However, high economic and social costs of such a policy enforced revision of the reform direction. The choice of social market economy as a basis of Poland's economic system has proved beneficial to both economic growth and socio-political stability. It also favoured the integration of Poland with the European Union. However, during the process, some mistakes were made. They resulted from both incompletely developed concept of social market economy in Poland and misconceived attempts of solving occuring problems within the process. Thanks to Poland's accession to the EU it has the right to decide jointly about the economic order in this part of the world and create new, better institutional solutions. The efficiently functioning social market economy might be the Polish contribution in a successful process of the European integration. (original abstract)
