Abstract

The results of the manufacturing industry survey were highly volatile in the 1st quarter of 2016. The industrial confidence indicator (ICI) increased to -5.3 pts in January, and dropped to -5.5 pts in February. It quarterly grew by 6.1 pts but was 3.9 pts down from the respective 2015 figure. Business situation deteriorated the most in manufacture of consumer durables, in the medium-size firms (251-500 employees), and in the Pomorskie Voivodeship. In comparison with the November figures the balances of production, total and export orders, employment and financial situation decreased. Opinions about general economic situation in Poland worsened. Inventories, average costs, the capacity utilization rate and barriers to business activity increased. The only bright spots on this gloomy picture of the industry is a rise in exports and its competitiveness. Firms view their business prospects for the coming months as negative. (original abstract)
