Abstract

The industrial confidence indicator (ICI) slightly increased (by 0.1 pts) in October but declined by 9.1 pts in November. In comparison with August it decreased by 11.0 pts., and was 4.1 pts down from the respective 2015 figure. On the quarterly basis, business situation worsened the most in manufacture of intermediate goods, in the large firms (501-2000 employees), and in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The majority of the main balances (production, total and export orders, employment, financial situation, capacity utilization and exports) quarterly decreased. Finished goods inventories and average costs of production grew. Opinions about general economic situation in Poland deteriorated. Business situation in the manufacturing industry in the 4th quarter were negatively influenced by seasonal and cyclical factors. Firms are pessimistic about their business prospects over the next months. Further worsening of business situation is expected in the 1st quarter of 2017. Increased uncertainty makes manufacturing activity highly volatile, and hard to forecast. Usually, business situation improves not earlier than by the 2nd quarter of a year. (original abstract)
