Abstract

Volatility of business situation in the manufacturing industry is still high. The industrial confidence indicator (ICI) and all the balances keep changing without any correspondence with the seasonal pattern observed before - from month to month they alternately rise and fall. In July the indicator declined by 8.2 pts, from +3.7 pts to -4.5 pts, and in August it increased by 8.9 pts. In total, ICI gained 1.0 pts (in comparison with May). It is now by 4.2 pts higher than one year earlier. Although business situation improved, on quarterly and annual bases, the indicator continues oscillating around its long-term average, showing no clear tendency to go up or down. Manufacturers' expectations are much alike. In August they were more optimistic than in July. No firm recovery should be expected in the short- and long-term.(original abstract)
