Abstract

In the 4th quarter of 2017 business situation in the construction industry deteriorated. The construction confidence indicator (CCI) quarterly declined by 7.8 pts to 8.5 pts. However, it is now 19.6 pts higher than a year earlier. The 4th quarter of this year was much better for construction companies than in the previous years. Such a high level of the CCI's cyclical component hasn't been noted since the Great Recession. The indicator calculated for the majority of the surveyed groups of construction companies was up from the figures recorded one year and two years earlier. Better business situation was reported primarily by private firms. Most of the main balances (production, export orders, selling prices and employment) increased. Firms better assess general economic situation both in the country and in the industry. Construction firms are, however, pessimistic about their future business prospects.(original abstract)
