Abstract

In the 1st quarter of 2019 sentiments of Polish households improved. The IRG SGH consumer confidence indicator (CSI) increased by 3.2 pts, and is only 0.3 pts down from the respective year 2018 figure. The rise of the indicator was mainly due to good prospects of financial situation of the households. On the other hand, consumers expect general economic situation in the country to worsen, which curbs their optimism and brings down the mid-term tendency of the indicator. It's worth noting, however, that the survey had been conducted before the government coalition announced the new transfer payment program which is expected to raise households' income and positively impact their sentiments. Yet, global and local economic slowdown is about to come soon, and taking both factors into account it is hard to say whether the improvement of the sentiments will withstand, and upturn the declining tendency.(original abstract)
