Abstract

Usually, the 3rd quarter of a year is a peak of manufacturing activity. This year, however, the industry recorded a slump, with the confidence indicator (ICI) dipping in September 6.6 pts down from the June figure. It is now lower than in September, 2018 by 12.1 pts. The signs of contraction, which were noted in the 2nd quarter, reinforced. The declining mid-term tendency burgeoned. Manufacturers were getting more and more pessimistic about their business prospects from month to month. Positive seasonal factors are expected to cease in the next quarter, and the industry will be affected by cyclical factors which have been negatively influencing manufacturing activity for many months.(original abstract)
