Abstract

Metrics are a fundamental tool used in project management, including research project management. Management and quality sciences develop, and their impact and significance continue to grow. Metrics should be adapted to different types of projects, different definitions of project success and different types of stakeholders. The aim of the article is to present proposals for metrics to manage research projects in the science sector and recommendations for their use. These recommendations are based on documentation from two research projects completed at a selected scientific institution funded by the National Science Centre and interviews with the project managers. The most important recommendation is the effective use of metrics in research project management, others indicate that metrics should not be based solely on achievements, metrics should not monitor only raw numerical data, metrics should take into account the human factor and metrics should be used at every stage of research project implementation.
