Abstract

The second decade of the 21st century witnesses the emergence of an extended offer of air transport companies based in the European Union, which has not only blurred borders between business models of air operators, but also eliminated a possibility to clearly identify relationships that link airlines into partnership or competitive arrangements.
The paper discusses spatial layout of the main streams of coopetition in the air transport sector in the European Union. We also examined factors that drive cooperation simultaneously with competition between the airlines and management strategies designed to restrict it. Possible directions of how the phenomenon is expected to evolve in Europe in the near future have also been drawn.
The study has led to an unambiguous conclusion: capital consolidation of air carriers fosters competition between airlines representing a particular air holding company and airline alliances from the same multilateral constellation who do not have such links.
