Integrated Management Systems Based on ISO Standards as a Substitute for Strategic Management

The article addresses the issue of strategic management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which typically lack formalised procedures in this area. In many cases, integrated management systems based on ISO standards serve as a substitute for strategy – both during its development and implementation. The authors point out that the process of implementing these standards largely corresponds to the classical steps of preparing and executing business strategies. As a result of implementing integrated management systems, companies achieve outcomes similar to those obtained through a formal organisational strategy – they formulate a mission, define strategic and operational objectives, identify risks and develop implementation plans. Moreover, positive results are observed in terms of organisational development: acquisition of new customers, stabilisation of their positions within a strategic group and expansion into new markets. The article is both theoretical and empirical in nature. Against the background of existing concepts of strategic management and quality management, the authors present research findings in the form of a case study of ten SMEs.
