Performance Management of Construction Projects: Literature Review

project performance, construction project, literature reviewAbstract
Performance management of construction projects supports decision-making throughout the project life cycle by utilising monitored information and data. Previous literature studies indicate that such systems are complex, and project managers and construction site managers may use them in a limited manner for controlling and optimising project performance. The main objectives of the paper are to identify the existing research areas in performance management of construction projects and to indicate potential directions for further research that could contribute to a broader application of the proposed solutions in business. In the reported study, scientific publication databases were analysed employing the umbrella review and snowballing literature review methods. The results presented in the article indicate that existing research in this field is fragmented. In addition to traditional criteria for assessing project success – cost, time and quality – an increasing importance of non-financial aspects has been observed, such as occupational safety, environmental impacts (of both the project and the deliverable), and the satisfaction of a wide range of stakeholders (including clients, end users, solution providers, subcontractors and others). What could pose a challenge for researchers is to develop a conceptual model that will support project performance management by the integration of various instruments currently used, while maintaining simplicity so that these solutions can be applied in small and micro-sized construction companies with limited resources.
